Ok, my setup is somewhat unconventional.. I use a Powerbook, and an IBM side by side (instead of 2 identical notebooks)
I was wondering what software you guys run on 2 laptops? OSX or XP, doesn't matter, I can run either. Something easy to use and nice to look at on screen. :P I've seen Mixman software for live performances of sampled music... is this software ok? Thanks! |

I'm not using it yet but MegaSeg is about the best program for OS X. There are a few other options out there for the Mac but nothing is as stable as MegaSeg. I know there are a couple of other DJs posting here that use MegaSeg. I know Mike Early uses it and I think SoundsLikeFunDJ uses it as well. I am just about ready to make the switch from CDs and I'll be using MegaSeg.
There is a lot of talk about OTSDJ on the Windows side but one of your requirements was something that was nice to look at. OTS in IMO is fugly. It would be so easy for them to clean up the UI. They need to hire a graphic designer for about a week and it would be done. |

Hahaha..thanks Dr. Rhythm! |

i have 3 copies of OTS. LOVE it. its beautiful. And it has never crashed. I had someone accidently pull out a exterior harddrive. OTS simply skipped over the music it couldn't find and played the next song it could.
My copy of PCDJ fx crashed on a regular basis. |

John,
I have played with numerous Microsoft PC based softwares over the years, but always end up back with OTS DJ. OTS DJ auto mixing is extremely well done; however, its auto beat matching/mixing is still "coming soon". I did just receive this auto beat matching/mixing link in an email so maybe it will be released soon. For now OTS DJ, although extremely good and my main software, is just a music player. The search functionality is fantastic. To get the most of the program CDs should be ripped into .ots files using the included OTS studio program. I currently own 2 licenses. Virtual DJ software also has my interest as it is a mp3, video and I believe karaoke. The auto beat matching/mixing and auto bpm calculation is really good. And at $149 sale price right now it is a really great bargain. Definatley worth trying. If I end up entering the video arena Virtual DJ may be my choice of software. Also worth mentioning is that there are numerous skins created that mirror common CD decks that you may be familiar with operating. I currently own 1 license. Swift Elite 3.0 by Tricerasoft is another great program offering music files, video, karaoke, picture slide show support, dmx lighting control, etc. I have not gigged with this software yet, but has been extremely stable while playing with it in my home studio. A good friend of mine has done several team video dance parties with Swift Elite and has received rave reviews. He also has stated that the program is easy to use and extremely stable. Definately worth a look. PCDJ has several good DJ programs. My partner uses PCDJ FX and loves it. At the last Mobile Beat DJ Show in Vegas PCDJ demo's a new music/video software that is expected to be released soon (not sure what that means). From what I saw at the demo it is definatley appealing. The video effects were absolutely amazing. DJ Decks has also recently received some good comments. I have no experience at all with this software, therefore I have no opinions. The list of softwares goes on.... Cheers, Steve Z |

We have been using www.mixmeister.com Video too. Excellent beat mixing, never crashed and more.

Steve That virtual DJ looks really good. It even has a skin for the Numark CDN 88. Which what I currently use. The only downside is that they don't make it for Mac.
Time to get that Windows Emulator Software. Or a inexpensive Windows based laptop. Regards, MusicDan The Truth is Out There BOSE Product Specialist & Assisted Sales Representative |

... or get a new Intel Duo Mac -- then you can boot OS/X or Windows, as you wish... |

Hiya, John
If you're into beat mixing I've found that Serato Scratch works identically on both the Mac and PC platform. That's the only piece of software I know that it completely cross platform and also does a good job. I wrote a review of that software and the Rane MP4 mixer for Mobile Beat (I'm the Editor at Large of Mobile Beat). On the Mac I agree that MegaSeg has a lot to offer Over on Windows, a good friend of mine is the demo guy for the Hercules Console and has found a lot to like about Virtual DJ. I understand that there is a forthcoming release of PCDJ for the Mac, so that may be another consistent cross-platform solution eventually, if that matters. Tony Barthel |

I use Mixmeister in my studio to pre-mix sets and I use OtsDJ live. Have done for years and I love it. I agree with the comment about the toy shop UI. It's a garish-looking piece of software desperately in need of skins.

SoundLikeFunDJ, I've heard and seen the Serato Scratch... and I've heard it is THE DJ rig to have... but does it work with MP3s within one laptop? I was looking at it, and it seems to need 2 identical systems running to A/B. I'm not really familiar with it or how it works... all I know is that it allows you to use your MP3s like regular vinyl. But you still need to use a traditional DJ rig right? (That's how it looked in the setup photo on their website)

The system I reviewed for Mobile Beat was the Serato Scratch software that came with the Rane MP4. With that system you could use one computer (any format) and employ the internal sound card on the MP4 mixer through the included USB cable to act as two sound channels.
The visual metaphor of two CD players (which is dated, in my opinion, but that's how most of 'em do it) worked on both sides of the crossfader on the MP4. The crossfader was also duplicated in the software so if you moved the crossfader on the mixer, it moved the virtual one in the software. I believe that you can also employ a Serato Scratch system that uses two computers of any configuration and can also tie in to turntables. I believe there are a number of ways of implementing the Serato Scratch software. I personally like MegaSeg better for the way I perform. I feel it has more to offer me but I don't scratch (unless people aren't watching, and even then I get caught now and again and my wife says it's gross). I do beat mix some, but it's not all I do. I also appreciate that MegaSeg will play my protected AAC files that I purchase on iTunes without having to use the analog hole in that system to use what I paid for. What's more, MegaSeg will play videos which I do. As a stable, full featured and affordable piece of software my opinion is that MegaSeg is an excellent choice and is worth buying for even Windows users for its flexibility and capabilities. Heck, you Windows users can get a MacBook Pro with an Intel dual core processor and run Windows or Mac OS on the same machine. Then you have a good computer that can also be disabled into running the most popular operating system as well. Hehehehe. Can you tell I used to work at Apple? Tony Barthel |

Tony, how do you like the video playback in MegaSeg? I looked at it and I think it's very cool. I wish it would offer some simple cross-fades for the video files as well. There are also a number of video effects built-in to OS X's Core Video. It would be cool if MegaSeg could take advantage of some of those effects. How are you using the video playback feature at your gigs?

I use BPM Studio and have been using it since 2000. An excellent programme especially when used with the RSP2001 controller which gives full hands-on control which is important to me as I still do many gigs where I need to beat-mix. BPM is extremely stable and contains some very good features. There have been rumours of version 5 being released "soon" seemingly for ever and the great new features that it'll contain but still no idea when it will eventualy come out.

To answer Rhythm's question, I like the video a lot in MegaSeg. I used to use another program with video on the Windows side (but I won't mention DJPower) and I had so many stability issues with it.
I used to project music videos a lot but I found that the newer the video was, the more it was like soft core porn. Eventually, I had to stop projecting music videos because there was no market for them. Can't show 'em at weddings, can't show them at schools so where can you show them? I don't work clubs, there's no money there. So, what I do is take digital snapshots throughout the night and project them moments later on the screen. I then use iPhoto's photo slide show functionality to project them. Then, once in a while I project a music video from something that's not going to offend people (many Promo Only classics, such as Tequila and Love Shack, etc.). Tony Barthel |

Tony,
Great insight on the video playback. Most of my gigs are wedding receptions and you're right I wouldn't want to show a number of the videos to an audience with children and seniors. I was actually thinking about specifically focusing on 80's music. Maybe offering a 80's retro video segment to clients that were interested. I look at the 80's as the golden age of music video anyway. You remember the days when MTV actually played music videos. Those are the days I remember. You rarely get actual music videos on MTV or even MTV2 anymore. If your lucky you get MTV Hits where they actually play videos. Anyway... How does the photo slideshow of the event work out for you? Do your client's enjoy it? Do you get good feedback on it? It sounds like a great idea to me. Thanks again for your feedback. On the original question it's interesting to me that no one mentioned Tracktor from Native Instruments on this list of applications. It's available for both Mac and Windows. Is anyone using Tracktor or has anyone tried it? I would like to know your opinion. I am not using it and I am not endorsing it but I wanted to know why it never came up in this thread. |

I agree that the 1980s were the golden age of music video. They weren't too raunchy just yet and that's when people probably saw them the most often for the reason you state, Rhythm.
That being said, I'd say that almost all music videos offend some of your guests at a wedding reception, whereas photographs of the guest not only offend nobody but also create an interactive experience that all the guests enjoy. In addition, it creates a unique status for your company as "that DJ with the picture show." Another reason why customers would be compelled to utilize your service. One fair warning; however. Do not show pictures of the guests during dancing. They stand on the dance floor and stare at themselves rather than dance. My practice now is to shut off the projector during dancing, except when I point the camera at the dance floor for some live shots. That doesn't stop them, but does make them point and wave and all that and I often have the camera rolling while I'm doing this, making for some great footage. Tony Barthel |
