With a single L1 M1 I'm always using channels 1 & 2 on preset 58 and I always recommend 1/4 plugs instead of XLR. The XLR input is for microphones and most mixers have an input that's way too high for that.

When I was using the model 1's, I used 1/4 inch into channels 1 and 2.

Like Scott Hanna: With Model 1, go from mixer with 1/4" -- if you want to use Preset, then Channel 1 & 2. Otherwise, Channels 3 & 4.

I'd only use XLR with a -20 db "pad" -- or if the mixer has a switch to reduce its XLR output to mic-level (e.g.: -20db).

Hi guys,

Ditto Dan and Scott's comments but one benefit of going the 'XLR with a -20db pad' approach is that you can use the balanced output from your mixer going into a balanced input on the model I. Just make sure you adjust the trim controls so that the signal level LED only flashes red very occassionally.

This is helpful if there is a lot of noise (RFI and hum, not the audience!) around.

Best wishes, Andy

Should work fine. It's the receiving part of the Model 1 Cnl 1 that responds different to XLR or 1/4"

Just to be sure and to lean more, let us know what the mixer make and model is. I'm sure someone here has used it.

I started origianlly using the XLR inputs, but as mentioned the signal was a little too hot for the input. I bought some RCA-to 1/4" long cables and ran that way for awhile but was not happy with the noise I would get on the unbalanced line. Bought some -20dB pads and went back to the XLRs, very happy with that setup.

I have a Denon X-900. I noticed there is a -10db switch, not a -20db, as recommended. Would that still be too hot for channels 1 & 2 on the L1? Would a better solution be XLR at mixer and 1/4" at L1? Wouldn't that make it unbalanced and therefore susceptible to interference?

Hi DeeJay.El,

You will probably be fine with the -10 dB switch engaged running XLR to XLR. And yes, that should be less susceptible to interference than using the ¼ inch jack that is unbalanced.
