I am planning on getting a QSC KW181 powered Sub to get that extra bass and punch for my gigs. Here are the 2 ways I intend to connect them (based on the posts I have read and information ST & Cap have shared on this forum). a. If I am using my Mixer (which I do when using 2 L1M2’s) – Connect the output from my mixer to KW181 and from KW181 to each L1M2/w single/dual bass (Analog input on the PS). Am not using the tonematch in this scenario. b. If am using just a single L1M2 along with Laptop – Laptop USB -> Tonematch -> Cat5->L1M2 On L1M2, I will connect my dual bass (B1’s) and from the PS connect my Packlite A1. On the A1 through, can connect the KW181. Would appreciate some sanity check on this one… Thank in advance to all the experts out there... Desi DJ

Bass is in the ear of the beholder. For my ears, 4 B1's do the job adequately. I understand some feel the need for even more bass but at $1300 and 110 pounds in weight, that sanity check may really be in order. Think about it.

Thanks Lou. I appreciate the feedback..I do have 4B1's and when using a single L1M2, I do use Packlite, but as much as I love the sound, its the customer that is paying me.... I do Bar Mitzvah's, Sweet16's and other School dances, where the young kids need more thump. Have tweaked EQ's setting etc, to the best of my ability to get the most bass and these kids still miss the chest thumping. I read somewhere that KW181 would be equivalent of adding 4/6 B1's... Now even 4xB1's would be (4x26lbs=100lbs+) and costing around $1200. Compare that with QSCW181 which is 81 lbs (with wheels) and cost $1300 (and just a single unit to drag on wheels). Just wanted to see what my friends on this forum thought about it.. If it makes sense (what I am thinking) or not worth time, money and effort on pursuing this option. Thanks again.. As always appreciate the immense wealth of information you have been contributing to this forum. Regards, Desi DJ

And as you rightly said - "Bass is in the ear of the beholder".. That ear is pretty important if its the one paying you

Dittos on that. For what you need it should do the job but I would wait for some others to chime in here. I recall Cap was schlepping a big sub for a while to appease that need for bass. A search on the subject might find that thread for you.

No thanks...my big hauling days are over, wow I am really surprised that any one who has the L1's would want to go back in time. I agree with Lou on this one... most of the time the DJ wants more bass than is needed. Four B1's is much louded than two (especially if you put them all together) & I think would sound way better than a third party sub... Just my 2 cents. We've Got The Tools, We've Got The Talent! So in scenario b, you are going to run 4 Bass modules and the powered subwoofer?
|
2 B1's and then use Packlite for the Powered Sub. Can we do 4 B1's and also the Powered Sub?
|
Hi DesiDJ, The normal set up with a PackLite: 2 B1s connected directly to the Power Stand Power Stand Bass Line Out to PackLite Amp 2 B1s connected directly to the PackLite Amp Yes, you could also use the PackLite Amp line out as a source for your Powered Sub. You will want to put all the B1s and your Powered Sub all together to avoid Multiple Source Interference.
|
ST has already addressed it - yes you can, I was just wondering why you would need to Packlite if you were just running the 2 B1s - unless your powered subwoofer doesn't have a crossover in it.
|
Hi Tom, DesiDJ,
Tom, you raise an interesting point. Please note that the PackLite Amp does not have a crossover in it. All the signal processing (crossover, EQ) for the B1s is done in the Power Stand, and it is that processed signal that is present at the Bass Line Out. You can read about that here: Bass Line Out.
|
Yeah, I forgot that the crossover was already done on the Powerstand - I was thinking of my Compact when I was typing that (plus wondering what he needed the Packlite for is he was only running the two B1s and the powered). Thanks for catching that. Tom

That QSC is a **** of a product, I've used it before as well as the K-Sub back when I was a traditional-system guy. Now running a Model II with a B2, I can say I DO miss the sound of a good 18. The B2 is GREAT, and will do me right almost everytime, but for the gigs you're describing, I can definitely recommend the setup you're proposing. It'll sound amazing. Am glad that I ran into this thread, as I am brand spanking new to the world of L1 systems (set of L1M2+ B2 sub ordered today), and I am contemplating use of QSC KW181 subs for larger venue events (600-800 ppl). Note: the KW181 subs do NOT have an internal crossover. They do have a low pass filter, so they can take a full range audio input, and pass thru full range out. I am thinking to send the mixer output to the power stands (not the subs) and then use TRS Bass Out (which sends sub-200 hz) into the powered subs. Can't wait for the order to arrive, and explore the Bose sound, as well as audio options for different venues...

I am using kv2 subs with my L1 classic. A electronic crossover is the best way to do this. It is much easier to match up volume with an electronic crossover. Otherwise, on my rig the sound is way out of balance.
|
DO NOT run the BASS OUT into your QSC SUB. They do not sound good crossed over at 200. It needs to be crossed over around 100. Get an electronic crossover.
