OK I'm ready to order my Bose system right ?

Last night I was up late checking out some threads on here and ran into one that said something like,,, speakers behind you ??

After reading into it I read someone said something about it being too loud with the L1's behind you. If this is true then the statement that I have been reading alot is what you hear 6 feet in front is the same everywhere in the room is a false statement ? For the most part I am ready to get my bose system, on the other hand. That one posting kinda made me think !

Can someone shed some light on this subject.

Being directly in front of any speaker would get uncomfortable but not as uncomfortable with the L1 than other systems. Putting a body directly in front of and between the speaker and the audience it is meant for, will block the sound to some degree.

It's all about personal preference. My ears almost constantly ring after a gig so I prefer the speakers in front of me but then it's hard to determine the volume for the audience. To the side and slightly behind works best for me.

I believe Bose still has a liberal return policy so check one out and tell us what you think.

Enjoy

Hey - I think most DJ's put them slightly out front, some do put them behind or even. The L1 was designed to be a PA and a monitor system. A musician will put it behind them so they can hear. There is no hard rule here. Whatever works for you. An amazing amount of sound comes off the sides and even from behind on the model 2. No matter where you put them it will be the best decision you have ever made. Good - Luck

I usually have the L1 MII, behind me and off to the left a bit. I have 2 other type venues, where the L1 needs to be out in front of me, due to room walls and tables to the sides, where the 180 dispersion gets the table customers, while trying to reach the Poolside people.
In that case, an experienced music performer/consultant from Savanna, named Roy, advised me on getting a small Galaxy Audio PA5X140 mic stand mounted powered monitor.

Yeah, Roy it works great.
I also haven't needed that spare Motion 1600 yet, but it is nice to know it is all loaded and ready. Oops, I forgot, spending that extra money was my idea. Still working on justifying a L1 Compact as a stocking stuffer.

Hi All!

Here's my two cents on speaker placement. I personally own the Model ii and the Compact. I place them right or left of me "even" or slightly ahead of me and turned in a bit towards me. Stage permitting I may have it to the side of me and slightly back. Never directly in back of me as I did it once and my ears paid the price. The short and the long and the thereof is that the room wins most of the time regarding placement. Good Luck!

AJ, do you have it gain staged correctly? I haven't been in a room yet that I haven't conquered with just one L1 and 2 B1's.

Thanks guys, and dynamite I've been all over your site forward and backward for at least a month now and wow nice pictures. Your site was what made me get serious about the Bose L1 with 2 Base Modules in the first place. I read alot about how its not that loud in front of the speakers and then someone says it is loud. Its kinda confusing.
There is no one here in Kansas city to demo the system, Guitar centers here don't even know squat about hooking one up to start with, been that route. Trust me you don't want to know ! Pretty bad sales people on the Bose. If I was Bose and had that kinda money sitting in their stores I would want to know if the sales people can actualy run an L1. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks guys I am sure I will be ok,,, ordering it Saturday. Let you know how it goes.

oh yeah, been there done that with the stores too. They don't have a clue. if they did I would had purchased 3 years earlier.

I'm not sure what the other guys are talking about as far as being too loud. I always run it just enough to fill the room but not overbearing. You'll want to make sure you don't use a eq or any other processors. Just the mixer you're planning to use straight into the power stand. I also recommend a band type mixer if possible.

Good Luck!!

The L1 doesn't need to be as loud as conventional PA systems to cover the same amount of area. Many users aren't really used to that yet, and run the L1 too loud. In that case, the volume would be harmful to your ears.

There are some occasions where you might need to be that loud, such as a HUGE room, or outdoors covering a very large area. Or as I recently ran into, an environment where there's a lot of ambient noise you're competing with. In those cases, the L1 may be too loud for comfort when used behind you. See tips above...

But usually, if the L1 is too loud to stand in front of, you're running it too loud in the first place.

Guitar centers, and understandably, most stores that sell all types of PA gear, don't want you to buy an L1.
If you do, you aren't likely to need anything else, like racks of EQs, compressors, exciters and such.
That's not good for their continued sales.

They don't realize, that after the Bose is paid off, you are able to buy other cool musical gear that's not related to trying to fix problems and clean up the sound.

BINGO!! , I forgot to mention that...

and when I went to a GC or was it MF... can't remember. The one here in Richmond on Broad St. , I asked the guy to demo it for me. He said man that thing is expensive and you'd be better off getting this or this and save yourself some money... I couldn't believe it.

He did demo it for me after I insisted, but it did sound like ****. I'm thinking it was hooked up wrong.... now, being a proud owner of 2L1M1 with 4B1's, a packlite, T1
and an L1 Compact, I know it was hooked up terribly wrong.

Hi Dynamite!

I thought the post was on speaker placement. Sorry. But to answer your question on gain staging the answer is 'Yes", and it is very very important that gain staging be done without any effects added. Have a great day all!

I was just asking a question I didn't know the answer to. If you are having problems conquering a room with the L1's placement then something else is wrong. I know that not all rooms are the same but as long as it's a room that holds a capacity of 200 or so people and it's basically a square, I can place my L1 almost anywhere to cover a room with out it hurting anyones ears.

AJ, I was just trying to help you in your statement you made. There was nothing in it meaning to offend you and I'm sorry if I did.

Hey Dynamite, I do have a Band board but it doesn't work. The Mixer I am using is a Numark cm100 I know not the best but it will have to work for now. I was thinking about getting a new board but it will have to wait.

I had a cm200 when I first started with it. It was awful. Got me a cheap ($60.00) Behringer 802 mixer, it worked much better, but not as good as the T1. Read my old posts you'll see what I'm talking about.

The Numarks signal is really hot. Just set the main volume on your numark mixer at halfway. Adjust the channels you use accordingly until you get the desired volume, set the trim on the power stand at 0, if you need more volume turn up the trim on the power stand. It will minimize the hot input and distortion of the numark mixer until you get pads or a different mixer.

Are you cd or laptop?
