i have a L1 Model 2 with the T1 tonematch. My grand piano is currently set up with 2 451B mics picking up the piano (base & treble), and then I have another vocal mic for my vocals. this is all plugged into inputs 1, 2, & 3 on the tonematch. here's where it gets a little complicated: i have a Canon XH A1s video camera that has 2 xlr inputs on it. So, i've got 3 mics, but only 2 xlr inputs on my video camera. i'd like to film some piano performances with the audio plugged into the camera for outstanding sound.
so, the master output on the T1 tonematch....is this a stereo out? i know i can program it for pre, or post master output, but i don't really understand that? |

Hi Scotty J,
Thanks for joining the forum! It looks like you have some nice stereo microphones on the camera. Have you tried recording using those? How did it sound? I looked up your Canon XH A1s and it looks like your XLR inputs can be set for microphone or line level. If you connect to the T1® you will want to use line level. Mono/Stereo The T1® is a mono device. The Master Output (¼ inch jack) is balanced mono. You could use a single cable that is ¼ inch jack Tip-Ring-Sleeve to XLR. This would supply sound for only one of your XLR inputs. I did a quick search through the manual for your Canon XH A1s to find out if you could take a mono input and send that to both internal stereo tracks. I didn't see a way to do that, but if you can, that would be something to try. On page 5 of the manual it says, "The camcorder is equipped with two sets of XLR audio input terminals with phantom power supply. Record audio using both audio inputs or combine one audio input and the built-in microphone:" I would certainly try that too. |

Thank you for the great response! i really appreciate that ST! very nice of you.
i've already done several recordings using just the built-in mics on the ah-x1s, and it's not too bad, but not great either. so if i plug in to the xh-a1s from the master out on the T1 will this work? i realize that i will only be plugging into just 1 of the XLR inputs on the camera, but will that sound just as good on tape? if you want to hear what the built-in camera microphone sounds like you can see me playing here http://www.youtube.com/user/wh...un#p/u/2/xoE-PSn10dY cheers! |

Pretty nice stuff there Scotty. You've really got that Jerry Lee styling down. I liked the random video, good strong bass run and great action with that right hand.
Best to you, Joel |

Hi, Scotty J!
Since the rest of the setup is mono, one choice would be to simply take a "Y" output (NOT an "insert", which separates the Tip and Ring, but a true "Y" ...) from the T1 Master (or Aux, if you enable that feature. If, on the other hand, there are times you want to just record the piano, an ideal approach might be to use the two "pre-amp" outputs (below the XLR inputs on the T1) for the two piano mics, taking those directly to the camera. That would, of course, be without the vocals or an other processing you do in the T1. However, I think ST's note that you can record "direct" (XLR) on one channel and use the camera's mic on the other channel might give you good results. You only need a single TRS to XLR from the T1 Master (or Aux) to one camera input. |
