Hello

Sorry about the dark nature of my posting.
I am a trumpet / sax player and had a collapsed lung last month.
My question to any wind musicians out there with the same bad luck, is this:
How long did the doctor tell you to avoid playing a wind instrument?
I was told I should never pick up the trumpet again, and I am not 100% convinced about this.

Many thanks, and again sorry for this sort of question.

I'm very sorry to hear what happened to you, that must be a terrible experience.

Since I'm not wind player I don't have anything useful to offer but my best wishes and the sincere hope that you will be able to play again.

Hilmar

There is a midi trumpet that could probably be adjusted to take a lot less breath pressure, and open up a whole new world of sounds and possibilities. Not the same as the real thing of course but a way to keep playing and building strength. Just a thought.
My WX-5 is much easier to blow than a real sax and is too much fun with all the sounds I have. Some of the sounds: saxes and trumpets are awesome
Might be worth checking out. Hope this helps. I got my two WX-5's off of Ebay and I use a Yamaha VL70m with a Patchman chip.

Life IS Good... just getting a bit expensive!

not to be cryptic, and this is a bit "off topic" but it really depends on why you had a "collapsed lung" or pneumothorax in the first place as to how quickly you should return to playing trumpet. If you have a lot of "blebs" that may rupture easily with increased pressure then you need to maybe change your instrument that requires less pressure than the trumpet. If this is a one time deal, and the rest of your lungs look ok, then once things heal then you could return to trumpet playing. Your MD would be the best person to answer that question if you put it to him(her) like that. I hope that helps some.
