I've had great feedback protection and sound from the Shure 98H/C. Can be bought for around $200. Does require phantom power and the 24V L1 works just fine. I had my dealer switch out the capsule for the narrower field one and you just point from where you want the sound.

I have used this as a clip on mic for my banjo.

Hi there, I took a chance and went for a cheap £60 option when getting a mic for my trombone, the JTS CX-508 (a copy of the AKG 419). I thought it would be a mistake, but lo, a bit of a tweak later (eq to remove the hiss, and gate to help with the high volume before feedback of the soul band) and my bone was sounding just right. Since then the sax player, having tried mine, has bought the same mic and the trumpet has bought the akg 519. At over twice the price, its still not exactly expensive.

The AKG gives a much tidier sound that the cheaper JTS, and has superior source accuracy, very little of the band is picked up. Sound wise there's very little difference in my opinion.

Clarinets are a funny thing to mic, as the radiate sound from all keys, two mics is often the best solution, otherwise i would recomend a less accurate mic, like the JTS, as the best solution.

Hope this is of some help.
James

I recently upgraded my older Samson Concert 77 wireless series clip-on mic for the Samson Airline 77. The spring loaded clip broke the first week I had it. I had the same problem with my Concert 77 clip but had an older Audio Technica clip that I just used instead. The Airline 77 clip-on mic is a lot heavier since the transmitter is on the clip-on mic. I went back to my local music superstore and upgraded to the Shure PGX14/Beta 98H, which is a lot better wireless system for a little more money. http://www.shure.com/proaudio/...gx14-beta98h_content
