Curious if anyone has gone through this. Our EVI player is leaving the band soon and being a former trumpet player thought about learning to play a Steiner EVI (I'm the keyboardist now). Problem is finding a Steiner model. Other option is to pick up one of the sax controllers and learn those fingerings. Is this realistic given limited practice time? Last resort would be to get a Yamaha Breath Controller for my Motif.
Any thoughts or comments are welcome! Thanks! Larry
The new version of the Akai EWI4000s can be configured to use the EVI Steiner trumpet fingering, so that's the way to go. Nyle Steiner also makes the MIDI EVI but there is a waiting list. Also, the EWI4000s has an internal modeled analog synthesizer, where the MIDI EVI is a controller only.
The EWI4000s is a fantastic instrument, and with the EVI fingerings (and new more specific sax fingerings) covers the needs of most wind players.
By the way, the Yamaha EZ-trumpet cannot be compared to the EWI4000s or Yamaha WX5 in terms of breath sensitivity, MIDI controller options, pitch bending and overall construction. Sort of the same difference from a student trumpet to a pro level trumpet - they do the same basic thing, but the more expensive one is soooooo much more musical and pleasurable. Like the L1 compared to a Mackie PA.
I understand the higher quality and versitility of the EWI4000s and WX5s but thought neither one was a 3 valve trumpet controler - So the EWI now will do that eh? cool.

Thanks for the information about the new version of the EWI with the trumpet valve fingering...definitely the way to go. May still get a Yamaha Breath Controller to go with my keyboard as an interim. Larry
